Issue 2 Postponed: Joint Statement from the Editors
Dear Readers,
As many of you know, the Under Review is based out of Minneapolis and St. Paul, editors on both sides of the Mississippi, in the cities that we love and in cities that are nearly incapacitated with throbbing grief and anger over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
While we are excited for the world to read this issue, we have made the decision, out of respect for our grieving and embattled community, and in honor of the memory of George Floyd, to postpone the launch of ISSUE 2.
While this news may be disappointing, we know firsthand the power of disruption. It is important to be made uncomfortable and inconvenienced to provide perspective and to be reminded of injustice in our own communities and around the world. We grieve the recent murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade and the countless others that came before or remain unreported. May we at the very least, remember their names long enough to emerge from this time of introspection with significant and substantial changes in our relationships and policies.
The voices presented in Issue 2 are a celebration of sport and the recognition of the joy it provides us in difficult times. We have work that speaks directly to those difficult times, private and public, past and present. Our world is and always has been on fire. And while sport can be a distraction and reprieve from that reality, it also allows us a filter through which we can see things more clearly, and more distilled if we choose.
We look forward to a time very soon when we can lift these voices up to the world. When the air is clearer, and there is space for us all to breathe, we will emerge again. We will take that breath, for George Floyd.
Peace and Justice. Justice.
Editors,
Terry Horstman and Meghan Maloney-Vinz
